Mia Hamm Foundation
Created to benefit the important issues that have directly affected Mia Hamm's life, Mia Hamm Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for bone marrow transplant patients and furthering the development of programs and initiatives for young women in sports.
The need for bone marrow donors is great. Mia Hamm Foundation helps to raise money and support for the cause by hosting an annual event. What used to be called The Garrett Game, a soccer exhibition match honoring Hamm's late brother who was affected by a bone marrow disease, is now the Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Celebrity Soccer Challenge. The 2008 event raised $150,000 to support bone marrow transplant patients and their families. Mia Hamm Foundation works closely with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), and Hamm is an honorary member of The Marrow Foundation's board of directors.
Though raising funds and awareness for bone marrow transplants is a large part of Mia Hamm Foundation, its mission is two-fold. The Foundation is also committed to continuing the progress of women in sports made over the last decade. The Foundation works to further the goals of Title IX and to increase opportunities for young women to participate in sports.
